As a label, Future Times releases dance music that sounds like it’s made not so much for the rump-shakers on the floor as for the beard-scratchers standing just off the edge analyzing every phase shift and sine wave. Label owners Mike Petillo (who performs in Protect-U with Aaron Leitko) and Andrew Field-Pickering (who also goes by Maxmillion Dunbar and makes up half of the duo Beautiful Swimmers with Ari Goldman) came up in the D.C. punk scene, and Future Times’ records often have a DIY sensibility—you can almost hear the vintage synth and drum-machine knobs being twisted and turned. But despite its muso vibe on wax, Future Times’ holiday parties appear to be all about the booty based on previous years’ mixtapes, which go hard on the ’80s electro-boogie. For this year’s throwdown, Brooklyn’s Bookworms and Protect-U will perform live, with Beautiful Swimmers handling the DJ duties. Comb your beard and warm up your tuchis because they’re both gonna get a workout. Bookworms, Protect-U, and Beautiful Swimmers perform at 10 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $10.
