When people started talking up the return of the cicadas this spring, it was a little confusing. Hadn’t they just been here in 2004? Was that really 17 years ago? Man, time flies. Turned out the bunch that emerged in 2013 was the New York-centric Brood II, not Brood X, which hits the D.C. area like, well, a pack of locusts and will return as scheduled in 2021. Local chefs still prepared stunt recipes, just in case, but for the most part, it was a case of the bugs that didn’t bark. (Or whatever bugs do.) The sure sign things weren’t that bad here? A cicada tasting at the Dutch Embassy used imported insects from New Jersey.
