How do you reduce D.C.’s mightiest politicos to a bunch of starstruck admirers? Put ’em in a room with Donald Trump. The mayor and half the D.C. Council melted in the face of the Donald’s charm, hair, and flood of superlatives about the ultraluxury hotel he has planned for the Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. At an on-site presentation in September, Trump laid out his vision for the $200 million project, with “incredible” rooms—which might, he says, be the most expensive in town—“amazing” views, and “one of the great ballrooms in the country.” And after the hotel’s done in 2015 or 2016, we may not have seen the last of Trump, who says he’s potentially interested in redeveloping the J. Edgar Hoover Building just down the street after the FBI leaves for a new headquarters.
