In the steamy revelry of Mardi Gras 1994, a voodoo shaman reached into a bag of mojo and pulled out a band called Galactic. OK, so maybe that never really happened, but the band does embody everything a Mardi Gras party ought to, blending blues, funk, jazz, and hip-hop together into one big, weird melange of sound. Sometimes, the band’s songs detour into smooth jazz. Other times, it’s all funk—horns and drums jamming seamlessly alongside bass guitars. When the band takes the stage at 9:30 Club tonight, it’ll reach deep into an assortment of melting pots and dish out songs honed over years spent on the road. Jam-band skeptics bear this in mind: Although Galactic performs on the annual Jam Cruise, its shows are more contained than those other noodly ensembles, so Deadheads should be scarce. Galactic performs with Ryan Montbleau at 7 p.m. at 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $30. (202) 265-0930. 930.com.
