Benin-born singer Angelique Kidjo’s new album, Eve, features guest appearances from Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmaglij, Dr. John, and The Kronos Quartet. But those high-profile guests make a quieter impact than Kidjo herself, not to mention the 10 female choirs from Benin and Kenya that appear on the album. Named after Kidjo’s mother as well as the biblical matriarch, Eve was inspired by Kidjo’s trips to Darfur and Kenya as a UNICEF representative. The opening track, “M’Baamba,” showcases Kidjo’s booming vocals, which contrast with the sweet-sounding harmonies of Kenyan women Kidjo recorded with her iPhone when they welcomed her to their village. Producer Patrick Dillett helps make this polished Afropop mélange all come together—the Benin percussion, the high-pitched Congolese guitar rhythms, the Luxembourg Orchestra strings, and the multilingual vocals that are both lilting and commanding.
