Dwele followed his appearance on the hook to Slum Village’s “Tainted” with his major label debut, Subject, a collection of heartfelt lyrics and deft piano playing, in 2003. The singer brings an enchanting presence to his songs, and casual hip-hop listeners will remember his vocal contributions to Common’s “The People,” Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” and “Power,” and fellow Detroit native Big Sean’s “Celebrity.” His hip-hop roots remain apparent, but his solo work resides more comfortably within the neo-soul subgenre. Smooth voice aside, Dwele’s forte is the ease with which he reinforces the music of artists ranging from some of the biggest names in hip-hop to legends like saxophonist Boney James. Tonight, the multitalented singer soothes the Birchmere audience with his signature serene vocals. Dwele performs with Raw Beauty at 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $45. (703) 549-7500. birchmere.com.—Julian Kimble
