The songs on It’s Her Fault, the new album by Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs, were reportedly worked over for months on the rural Athens, Ga., property owned by Golightly and partner/bandmate David “Lawyer Dave” Drake, the primary Brokeoff. The amount of care taken is obvious—the record’s 12 cuts exude a certain rootsy perfectionism—but Golightly’s core appeal hasn’t changed much, thankfully, since she was deep in Billy Childish’s low-fi garage/punk scene in the ’90s. She’s got way more twang now, but her cool confidence is still firmly in place. When she goes after country-music posers on “Bless Your Heart” (“No, you ain’t country, anyhow”), it’s not a cheap shot—it’s a deadpan observation from an English lady who knows very well that rock ’n’ roll is an act, but it’s best when it’s not a total put-on. Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs perform with Rifle Cleaning Party at 9 p.m. at DC9, 1940 9th St. NW. $10–$12. (202) 483-5000. dcnine.com.
