It’s Easter, so naturally, our thoughts turn to Jesus. Many Christians celebrate the resurrection with candy, ham, and a backyard hunt for eggs. But there are other ways to honor Jesus, and a break from tradition does not necessarily do him a disservice, which is precisely why you should go see the Coathangers at Comet Ping Pong. Think about it: Jesus would have been down with overtly feminist punk rock, and also pizza. He’s all about equality, after all, and the group’s stripped-down punk aesthetic has more in common with a sermon than, say, an overproduced pop record. The Coathangers’ latest album, Suck This Shirt, begins with a riff-filled barnburner called “Follow Me,” which sounds like something Jesus would say, right? If you’re not into the Son of God and Easter is just another Sunday, well, at least the Coathangers’ “Zombie” will make a terrifically grim joke. The Coathangers perform with Chain & the Gang and Audacity at 9 p.m. at Comet Ping Pong, 5037 Connecticut Ave. NW. $12. (202) 364-0404. cometpingpong.com.
