Tech N9ne’s career is proof that you can ride a niche talent to commercial success. The Missouri rapper has made his name simply: by eschewing trends, creating catchy music, and touring nonstop to support it. His rapid-fire flow and proclivity for the bizarre have drawn a legion of eager fans who routinely fill up venues, making Tech N9ne just as bankable at the Insane Clown Posse’s Gathering of the Juggalos as he is on the Rock the Bells bill. Tech N9ne has launched the Independent Grind Tour, named in tribute to his tenacious work ethic and featuring co-headliner Freddie Gibbs. While Tech N9ne is an outlier mostly in style, Gary, Ind., native Gibbs is an outspoken, necessary evil, completely indifferent to those his confrontational honesty offends. That ethos, as well as his recent release Piñata (a stellar collaboration with California producer Madlib), adds a much-needed layer of aggressive candor to contemporary hip-hop and makes for an explosive live show. Tech N9ne performs with Freddie Gibbs, Krizz Kaliko, Jarren Benton, and Psych Ward Druggies at 8 p.m. at Howard Theatre, 620 T St. NW. $30–$35. (202) 803-2899. thehowardtheatre.com.
