Nero fiddled while Rome burned, the legend goes. But what if someone resembling the former emperor emerged from the ashes as a glam rocker? The practitioners at WSC Avant Bard play with this premise in their new musical Nero/Pseudo. The idea isn’t historically accurate, obviously, but this theatrical romp isn’t trying to tell the truth. Instead, it obsesses over glitter and synths, turning the disgraced leader into David Bowie circa 1972. Playwright Richard Byrne (a former Washington City Paper staffer) has been refining the piece for more than two years with musical collaborators Jim Elkington and Jon Langford, and it’s finally ready. Get out your best pleather pants, tune your lyre, and enjoy the revelry at Fort Fringe. The play runs May 7 to June 1 at the Shop at Fort Fringe, 607 New York Ave. NW. $15–$25.
