“I’m not sure if apps like Grindr and Scruff have really changed the hook-up dynamic in clubs all that much. At least those that cater to gay men. Yeah, people complain about apps making people more isolated. But every generation complains about new technology destroying the world. In fact, if these apps have altered the cruising dynamic at clubs, I’d wager that the effect has been to shift (however slightly) the motivations for attending a club from sexual to social. Since one can now hook up from any place with cell service, gay clubs are no longer absolutely necessary for cruising, allowing them to become places of more general socializing.”
