The D.C. Council is about to get a lot straighter. Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham lost his re-election bid, and At-Large Councilmember David Catania has to give up his seat to run for mayor. The Council will go from having two openly gay councilmembers to having none in January. That may be a symbolic loss, but gay activists say the Council’s ensuing heterosexuality won’t matter to gay rights in the District. “We collectively have a seat on the table that’s based on more than just a particular person sitting on one of the cushy chairs,” says Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance president Rick Rosendall. Indeed, activist Bob Summersgill says most of the gay rights advances in the past 10 years have been led by straight members of the Council, like Chairman Phil Mendelson.
