So who’s Hank? Perhaps you’ve pondered this over a lobster roll at the Dupont oyster bar. Hank is chef Jamie Leeds’ father and culinary inspiration. Leeds opened the first Hank’s Oyster Bar in 2005 and has since reeled in a bounty of accolades, as well as opening two more locations (one on Capitol Hill, one in Arlington). But there’s more to Leeds than her marinated sablefish or oysters on the half shell—she’s also a leader in the LGBTQ community, which she says has grown far more vibrant since she moved here in 2002. The original Dupont Hank’s is a well-known gay gathering place, especially with some of the offerings Leeds has devised like a ladies tea on the first Sunday of every month. “The fact that I’m a gay woman owned business is setting an example for younger women to do the same thing,” she says. Looking forward, Leeds has one wish: “I’d like to see more venues for women; the boys have plenty of places to go.”
