The Reel Independent Film Extravaganza wants to do to cinema what “eat local” campaigns have done to agriculture. Touting itself as “a new kind of experience,” RIFE, now in its fifth year, has devoted way more of its 2014’s international indie slate than usual to films produced in D.C. As a whole, the fest—which was founded by filmmakers—is a reflection of its exclusive venue, West End Cinema, which runs offbeat indies you often can’t see anywhere else in the area. So consider RIFE your chance to see offbeat indies you really can’t see anywhere else in the area. Another of its handful of taglines is “the people’s festival.” Which means that if you’re people, you should go. Oct. 10–16 at West End Cinema. $30–$45.
