ABSOLUTELY! {perhaps}, Martin Sherman’s 2003 update of a 1917 finger-wagging Luigi Pirandello comedy, preserves the original’s condemnation of gossip and suggestion that truth may be subjective. Like so much of Constellation Theatre’s work, Allison Arkell Stockman’s production looks and sounds great while employing more actors than you can easily keep track of (thirteen, the program says). None of them are bad, and a few are memorable. But the lasting impression is of a joke with a long, convoluted setup and a slender, confusing punchline. At 90 minutes sans intermission instead of two hours with one, this would probably feel a whole lot groovier.

Set and lighting designer A.J. Guban and costume designer Kendra Rai have surpassed even their earlier achievements by bringing this Italian comedy into the era of Mad Men and La Dolce Vita. It’s set in the groovy, space-age bachelor pad of Lamberto Laudisi (Constellation regular Ashley Ivey, caparisoned in a yellow-and-green patterned shirt-and-scarf combo topped off with a blonde Ken wig), a martini-swilling bon vivant who is alone in his indifference to the secrets of the town’s newest residents, Signor Ponza (Michael Glenn) and his mother-in-law Signora Frola (Kimberly Schraf). Everyone else crowded into his geometric, split-level, mirrored-ceiling crib—his sister and her husband and their friends—are obsessed with discovering why Ponza won’t allow his mother-in-law to live with him and his wife. Ponza and Frola each present themselves separately to the rubbernecking committee, each trying to convince them the other is insane.

Ivey floats above it all, giggling and flirting while gently rebuking his guests for their morbid curiosity. Catherine Deadman finds the magical vocal key to make her hysterical interjections land, and Julie Garner has a regal authority in her late appearance as the town’s mayor. By the time she shows up, though, you might be asking what took her so long.
