After conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton were born in Sussex, England in 1908, their mother essentially sold them into a life of forced performance. Though they went on to become some of the most famous conjoined performers of their time and appeared in films like Freaks and Chained for Life, their lives were marred by physical and mental abuse and exploitative relationships. Bound By Flesh, a documentary about the twins’ turbulent career in the sideshow business, aims to shed light on their experiences through interviews with friends and family and expert analysis from freakshow scholars. Though the twins took their truths to the grave, the film is dotted with rumored tales of thieving managers, forbidden love, false marriages, and, of course, curiosity-whetting sex stories. After the screening, director Leslie Zemeckis and sideshow expert and author James Taylor will take the stage and answer audience questions to, ahem, separate fact from fiction. The film shows at 7:30 p.m. at Artisphere, 1101 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. $10. (703) 875-1100. artisphere.com.
