There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Despite working in a Canadian city that counts shipbuilding and fishing among its main industries, producer Ryan Hemsworth has made his name in the music industry thanks, in some part, to SoundCloud. The Halifax, Nova Scotia–based artist first gained attention remixing songs by Frank Ocean and Cat Power; now, as a solo act, he guides electronic and rap bangers in and out of the melodies and beats he concocts on his own. Since his 2013 release, Guilt Trips, Hemsworth has distanced himself slightly from those smooth, R&B-influenced tracks and adopted more of a pop sound on Alone for the First Time. It’s fresh and lyrical, taking on themes of desire and uncertainty. But even on somber tracks like “Hurt Me,” the melodic compositions remain upbeat. His moody, introspective sounds provide the perfect soundtrack for a late fall evening. Ryan Hemsworth performs with Tennyson and Ricky Eat Acid at 10 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $18.
