Sticking around D.C. for the holidays or waiting to jet at the last minute? Fortunately, some of D.C.’s brightest soul bands are still in town to take the stage at Rock & Roll Hotel. Big Country Express, a soul-rock quintet that’s been playing around the area since July 2013, headlines the show with bass-heavy songs about journeys and plenty of long jams. Folk artist Tomás Pagán Motta’s introspective lyrics earn him comparisons to Dawes and My Morning Jacket, but his breathy delivery also brings to mind elements of Neil Young’s performance. But if your goal on a Saturday night is to dance, show up for funk band Aztec Sun and its brassy arrangements. With tunes this good and affordable, you’ll be glad you stayed in town this weekend. Big Country Express performs with Tomás Pagán Motta, Hello Dharma, and Aztec Sun at 7:30 p.m. at Rock & Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $12. (202) 388-7625. rockandrollhoteldc.com.
