McCormick & Company says it sells approximately 50 million ounces of Old Bay seasoning every year. That figure, in the D.C. area at least, must have jumped in the past 12 months, because the zesty spice mixture most commonly used to coat steamed blue crabs was much more prevalent in 2014. In celebration of Old Bay’s 75th anniversary, Herr’s, which already sells an Old Bay potato chip, added Old Bay to popcorn and cheese curls. Flying Dog Brewery also celebrated the anniversary with a summer ale brewed with Old Bay called the Dead Rise. But the biggest sensation came from Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken, which sandwiched an enormous fried chicken breast between two halves of a savory Old Bay flavored doughnut. True to form, it turned eaters’ fingers a familiar shade of orange, but left a slightly lingering desire for a pile of crabs and a cold Natty Boh.
