Over-produced holiday music is at a premium this time of year but it’s the classic, simple interpretations of Christmas standards by the likes of Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole that hold up year after year. In that case, Gypsy Sally’s is making a wise bet by featuring The Woodshedders at its Holiday Grass show. The West Virginia-based string band calls its genre of music “indie roots Americana” but its lush instrumentations and intricate fiddle work defy neat labelling. While the band frequently performs original folk tunes, Wednesday night’s performance will find them putting their unique spins on seasonal classics like “Silent Night” and “Away In a Manger.” Joined by fellow string acts The Plate Scrapers and Brandy Station Company, The Woodshedders will perform some Christmas jams destined to fill the audience with cheer and goodwill. Skip the holiday albums from pop ingenues and keep your musical selections local this year. The Woodshedders perform with The Plate Scrapers and Brandy Station Company at 8 p.m. at Gypsy Sally’s, 3401 K St. NW. $10. (202) 333-7700. gypsysallys.com.
