Cotton & Reed‘s Union Market-area rum distillery is still under construction, and they’re not producing any spirits quite yet. But that doesn’t mean they can’t approximate the recipe for their spiced rum and allspice dram with infusions and then serve up cocktails.

Founders Jordan Cotton and Reed Walker, along with barman Lukas Smith and distiller Chas Jefferson, will be slinging drinks at Darnell’s on Saturdays through June 25, including a “Hard Liquor/Hard Bodies”-themed pop-up this weekend in honor of Capital Pride. Tomorrow, from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m., the team will serve “elevated fitness drinks” (read: alcoholic riffs on fitness drinks) created by Smith, formerly of Dram & Grain.

The team tries to work out together as much as possible, but ultimately ends up spending the whole time “huffing and puffing” about spirits and cocktails. “So we figured we’d flip it and instead of talking drinks at the gym, we could take fitness to the bar,” Cotton says.

Each drink is inspired by some kind of exercise trend: The “Jon Harris Master Cleanse” contains all the ingredients of a classic cleanse beverage—lemon, maple, and cayenne—but with the addition of rum. Other concoctions are made with Gatorade, including “Do You Even Lime, Bro?” with lemon-lime Gatorade, One Eight Distilling’s Ivy City Gin, cucumber, and mint. The drink is even served in a Gatorade bottle.

Chef Christian Irabien, who’s worked at restaurants like Le Diplomate and Oyamel, will be serving food, too. Look out for chicken flautas as well as root, leaf, and fruits tacos with smoked jalapeños and peanuts. 

Bonus: Walker’s personal collection of old VHS workout tapes will be playing. And the patio will be open.
