D.C. police are looking for a driver who fatally struck a cyclist in the 2600 block of Minnesota Avenue SE then fled the scene.
In a release, the Metropolitan Police Department says the driver was traveling in a gray vehicle, possibly a Volvo, early Thursday; the driver struck the victim, who has not been identified, then drove away in a northbound lane. The victim is a black man in his mid-30s.
The incident happened just blocks from where a pedestrian, Ian Jerome Butts, was fatally struck by a driver in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Sophia R. Palmer, a 31-year-old from Southeast, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in Butts’ death, which happened in the 3500 block of Minnesota Avenue SE. In May, Palmer pleaded guilty to negligent homicide of a pedestrian. She’s set to be sentenced in September.
Update, 9:09 p.m.: According to the proffer of facts, Palmer was driving at around 50 mph on a street with a 25 mph speed limit.
