Laura Hayes has been named the new food editor of Washington City Paper, Editor Steve Cavendish announced to the staff on Thursday.

Hayes has written dining features and reviews for a number of D.C.-area publications, including City Paper, the Washington Post, Washingtonian, Bethesda Magazine, and more. She’s a 2007 graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

“Laura has done great work forus already, and I can’t wait to see what she does on a full-time basis,” Cavendish said. “She’s smart, knows Washington’s dining scene, and is full of ideas. She has some pretty big shoes to fill with Jessica Sidman leaving, but I think she’s up to the task.”

Sidman is leaving to join Washingtonian.

“I’ve always found my work at City Paper to be the most fulfilling because of the paper’s reputation, tone, and engaged reader base,” Hayes said. “It’s an honor to be joining the dynamic team there, and I’m grateful for the editing support I received from Jessica Sidman while I served as a contributor—she is indeed leaving behind a legacy.” 

Hayes begins on July 11.
