Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor dined at Estadio last night. The 14th Street Spanish restaurant was the chosen location for a birthday dinner honoring opera singer Carla Dirlikov Canales.
In 2014, Sotomayor presented Dirlikov Canales with the Sphinx Medal of Excellence in a ceremony concert held at the Supreme Court of the United States. She was the first woman to receive the distinction.
Estadio Manager Jennifer Lucy, the 2016 RAMMY winner for restaurant manager of the year, says the reservation was under Dirlikov Canales’ name, and the restaurant learned of the Supreme Court justice’s attendance the night before. The party of eight was seated at the coveted round table in the front of the restaurant and few, if any, other diners seemed to be aware of their presence.
The group sipped cocktails instead of wine, according to another manager, and ordered off of the regular menu. They only went off-menu for dessert, according to Lucy. Estadio’s new pastry chef René Abarca baked a gluten-free cake for the occasion.
