There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Capitol Hill Chinese restaurant Hunan Dynasty located at 215 Pennsylvania Ave. SE caught fire this afternoon prompting New York Senator Chuck Schumer to panic. It is, after all, his favorite restaurant.

The senator’s unbridled love (a wanton love, you might say) for the restaurant is documented in his book, Positively American: How Democrats Can Win in 2008. Look out Sietsema, you have competition. He writes:
Photos of Washington politicians adorn the staircase leading to the second-floor restaurant, which always has the faint smell of disinfectant (on that wall, I’m younger and thinner and have more hair). A huge freshwater fish tank separates the host station from the dining area. I have eaten more meals there over the past twenty-four years than at any other place outside of my Brooklyn apartment. The food is good and it’s not very expensive—a combination I look for in a restaurant.
He also likes the restaurant because they give him a free almond cookie after every meal.
DC Fire and EMS communications officer Doug Buchanan says one firefighter was transported to a clinic with minor injuries. The fire started inside the restaurant. “We knew we had smoke coming out of the eaves, we finally got it opened up and found something in the HVAC system that lead to the duct work,” he says. All units have picked up and moved on. No word yet on damages.
