Three guys from Republic Kolache and Reliable Tavern are joining forces to celebrate D.C.’s signature cocktail, the Rickey. For the next ten weeks or so, Ben Long, Ben Alt, and Chris Svetlik will operate a pop-up bar called 60 Rickeys on Wednesday nights inside Reliable Tavern in Park View, just south of the Georgia Ave.–Petworth Metro station.
Starting this Wednesday, they will serve six new Rickeys each week, twisting the classic combination of lime juice, soda, and either gin or bourbon into something new. They’ll play with alternative lead spirits, build Rickeys that are lower in alcohol for school nights, and even switch out the lime for a different fruit or vegetable.
During the pop-up, Svetlik hopes guests will talk about the history of the Rickey, which dates back to the 1880s. You can bone up on basic knowledge on the 60 Rickeys website.
No prize has been announced for the bold individual who manages to down all the Rickeys, but there will be punch cards available so drinkers can track which of the 60 variations they’ve tried.
Republic Kolache, the local purveyors of Texas’ most delicious pastry with Old World origins, is working towards opening a permanent location, according to Svetlik. He says Rickeys could be on the cocktail list when a brick-and-mortar spot opens.
Until then, visit Reliable Tavern Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
