Jamie Leeds now owns and operates four Hank’s restaurants in D.C. The restaurateur opened Hank’s On The Wharf this week and its menu embraces fried food, since the city’s newest development has a boardwalk feel.
If you’re feeling particularly sorry for yourself, you can build your own tasting menu of the restaurant’s golden brown eats. They include funnel cakes served with malt vinegar ($6), a seafood corndog with Narragansett beer mustard ($8), sweet corn hush puppies with cayenne remoulade ($6), and crispy coconut pufferfish with ginger orange glaze, cucumber, and scallions ($13).
The rest of the menu, executed by Chef Chris Edwards, doesn’t diverge far from what’s offered at the Hank’s Oyster Bar locations in Dupont, Capitol Hill, and Old Town, Alexandria. Diners can order seafood plateaus ($40–$75) from the ice bar, a rotating selection of “meat & two” plates like Wednesday’s chicken schnitzel paired with two sides ($19–$26), and large plates like a lobster roll with Old Bay fries ($25) and a fried Ipswich clam dinner ($28).
Cocktails have cheeky names like “I Have Stronger Feelings For Sauvignon Blanc Than Anyone I’ve Ever Dated,” with vodka, sauvignon blanc, grapefruit, soda, and basil ($14), and “Basically a Detox,” with bourbon, ginger, matcha green tea, and kale ($12).
There are also sharable cocktails like the “Boardwalk Empire,” containing rye, sherry, vermouth, and bitters ($30); a selection of four different shots ($6–$9), two draft cocktails ($12), two frozen drinks ($11), and a set of canned cocktails ($8–$9) called “cantails.”
The 3,390-square-foot restaurant faces the Potomac and has a 64-seat patio. Inside, there’s a dining room that can seat 50, plus a six-seat oyster bar, and 16-seat main bar all designed by Swatchroom’s Maggie O’Neill.
Hank’s On The Wharf is open for dinner Sundays through Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (with the bar open from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.) and Thursdays through Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. (with the bar open from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.). Happy hour runs daily from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
