The U.S. Men’s National Team blew their chances to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but bars are still banking on the District’s internationally inclined population to swig pints and toast teams as they watch the matches.
One group is going so far as to launch a World Cup-themed pop-up bar housed in what used to be The Prospect on U Street NW. The sports bar from Social Restaurant Group closed in April and will eventually reopen as a new permanent concept.
World Cup HQ plans to show “every game and every goal from every country” by operating from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily from June 14 through July 15.
A food menu from Chefs Alex McCoy and Ryan Hackney will be available whenever the bar is open. McCoy is currently making a name for himself serving messy calorie bombs at his globally inspired burger joint Lucky Buns on 18th Street NW. His burger-centric menu for the pop-up will also draw on flavors from around the world.
To drink, World Cup HQ will serve shareable cocktails, frosé, steins of beer, and wine carafes.
If you can’t play hooky to watch your favorite team during the day, head over for the “happy hour rewind” starting at 4 p.m. every day. The bar will replay games and food and drink specials will be offered.
