If you want to get a full taste of what Call Your Mother has to order, gather a group and order the “Big A$$ Bagel Board.” It’s a breakfast pupu platter loaded with wood-fired bagels, shmears, meat, fish, and veggies.

The so-called “Jew-ish” deli is finally opening next week at 3301 Georgia Ave. NW.  Andrew Dana and Daniela Moreira from Timber Pizza Co. are behind the restaurant, as is Jeff Zients, who has always wanted to open a Jewish deli.

The Call Your Mother menu reflects Dana’s half-Jewish heritage and Moreira’s Argentinian roots. Highlights include a hot dog on a house-baked challah role; a play on a Philly cheesesteak with pastrami and brisket; pastrami empanadas; and matzah ball “sopa” that draws influence from South America; chocolate babka for dessert; and all the Yoo-hoo you can handle. Over the summer, the team announced a recipe contest. “Every time we tell people we are opening a deli, they tell us about their childhood deli, or their favorite deli from back home,” Dana told City Paper in July. “We want people to be able to put their personal stamp of home or their childhood on Call Your Mother. It would be cool if we could have a few recipes that come from the neighborhood so people feel that personal connection.”

Dana says they’re down to three finalists’ dishes and winners will be revealed on the opening menu.

The exact opening date and the hours are still being determined. This post will be updated. Come November, Call Your Mother will also offer an evening supper club Tuesday through Friday nights.
