City Paper is not for tourists
HO HO WHO: John Legend, the EGOT-winning soul and R&B singer who’s yet to find something he cannot do well. While raising two adorable kids with his wife, the iconic human powerhouse Chrissy Teigen, he took time to record a new holiday album, A Legendary Christmas. And while it’s full of bops from start to finish, including an excellent, very upbeat rendition of “Silver Bells,” the gem here is the Peanuts jam from A Charlie Brown Christmas, “Christmas Time Is Here”—a rare addition to celebrity holiday albums. Legend’s voice is so smooth—like an actual stick of butter slowly melting in a warm pan. Combine that with Charlie Brown and we’ve got a BOP, people. Sidenote: After acknowledging his resemblance to one character from a beloved animated classic—the titular aardvark on Arthur—it’s nice to see him taking on a classic from another beloved animation.
GOOD GRIEF, I’M CRYING: This song already fills me with happy nostalgia, so the simple fact that Legend’s version exists puts a smile on my face as I think of the original. But John just had to go and lend his vocals to it and make it wonderful. Am I listening to John Legend sing “Christmas Time Is Here” or diving into a delicious pool of Dove chocolate? Who could tell the difference?!
THE PEANUTS—BUT WITH JAZZ: This time there’s no children’s voices, the pace is a tad faster, and the instrumental is imbued with jazzy percussion and brass. But let’s talk about the ending of this song. Within the last 40 seconds, the tempo speeds up and the instrumental becomes an even jazzier little number to which you can merrily slam your body down and wind it all around.
CHEER FACTOR: 10/10. You can’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy while listening to this. Get in your holiday-themed pajamas, sip hot chocolate, put this song on, and wish your life was anything like John Legend’s. Shout out to you, John.
