Hi! I’m Will. Whenever people ask me what I do (we are in D.C., after all), I explain that City Paper’s a small place and we all wear a lot of hats. I copy edit the paper, write cover stories, hosted our podcast, and compose tweets, but the thing I’m most proud of isstarting our membership program.
When we launched our program this fall we didn’t know if people would join. The night before launch I couldn’t sleep. It felt like I was hosting a party, and I was so nervous that no one would show up. But of course you did show up. So many of you showed up, in fact, that we feel confident that we can rely on the generosity of our readers and the community to support our work. It’s ambitious, but we believe in ourselves, and we believe in you.
And while I of course love getting notifications that new people are supporting the paper, my favorite part is hearing people’s City Paper stories. I’ve heard from readers who have relied on City Paper to tell them what to do for decades and ones who love that we hold powerful people to account. I’ve heard from readers who remember stories written before I was born and ones who won’t stop gushing about what we published last week. I’ve talked to readers who do our crossword religiously, native Washingtonians who grew up reading the paper, and journalists whose careers this paper helped launch. Hell, I’m one of those journalists.
Talking to you has made me realize that this place, while small, is so very big because it belongs to its readers and to the city. And I’m so humbled that I’ve gotten to help start this program and support the paper we all love in this way.
I hope you’ll join me in supporting it. When you become a member now, your contribution will be doubled thanks to our matching funds campaign. And you can get some pretty cool swag, too.
